ANC’s strategies ensure a safe supply chain work environment for all and relies on client supply chain integration supported by our client’s own safety culture, systems, processes, measurement and reporting. ANC’s safety strategies are client centric, building client specific procedures with ongoing training for safe and consistent outcomes for all parties. We do this through a solid and formal task analysis, in consultation with key stakeholders, including reviewing data, and conducting risk assessments to review physical operation and client site environments.

ANC’s detailed policies, procedures and various other documentation, are delivered to our clients, their teams and our ANC team, in a structured safety system for risk mitigation and ongoing management. Independent auditors review our Workplace Health & Safety (WHS), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) and compliance systems annually ensuring they are relevant and robust to the ever-changing transport environment risks.

Safety training is for everyone

It’s a simple fact. Effective, relevant and ongoing safety training results in fewer workplace incidents and injuries. That is why everyone at ANC, and we mean everyone, completes training. We’re so committed to our safety culture we often consult to our clients offering our expertise to their management and training for workplace safety.


Ensuring safety training is accessible

Our safety training – induction, site training, specific client training, fatigue, chain of responsibility – is conducted predominantly through the web using RapidInduct software. This way:

  • all team members can access the material at any time
  • courses are constantly updated with the latest information
  • training is interactive, with a test after each section
  • training is measured and monitored throughout the important cycles.


ANC invests in systematic training of Contractors and Employees.

  • Ten Driver Performance Managers employed nationally
  • Core business inductions run on an annual re-induction
  • Using Rapid’s secure server, contractors can access at any time online processes & procedures, training, compliance, tool boxing and more.

We produce informative safety and training videos specific to unique delivery services and vehicle types.

To work with ANC, and always be up-to-date with safety, every employee must:

  • requalify every year
  • pass the short tests
  • show competency in these components.

Our National Safety Team review individual reports on employee and contractor training progress so ANC knows the current competency, expertise and compliance of everyone. 

Managing and mitigating safety risks in transport, and beyond

An important part of our safety strategy is being able to understand, manage and mitigate safety risks while running the business effectively and delivering on our last mile promise. At ANC we see the importance of following legislative requirements, but we also strive to implement and uphold industry best practises to ensure we’re ahead of the curve. We do this by risk assessing everything we do, including our clients sites, and work to mitigate that risk as much as reasonably practicable.


1. Fatigue Management

While ANC does not operate Fatigue Regulated Heavy Vehicles with every client, we apply the same best practice to our planning, manifesting or scheduling activities and systems.

ANC trains and monitors all contractor drivers and our employees in line with standard hours as defined by Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) allowing for a maximum of 12hrs working time in any 24hr period.

For our contractors, working includes loading, driving, unloading, paperwork/administration, in fact any activity working in, on or around the vehicle.

2. Load and Loading Safety

One of the greatest risks in transport and logistics is during the loading and unloading of goods, and the diversity and complexity of the loading environments. From highly governed client sites to irregular customer sites, our contractors are trained to ensure they know the processes and procedures to safely deliver in a range of circumstances. Most importantly, our contractors and team are trained to refuse a delivery if the load or loading environment is deemed unsafe.

Key components of safe loading are:

  • Load Planning: understanding and monitoring mass and dimensions, ensuring accurate descriptions and information throughout the supply chain, ensuring the vehicle is fit for the task
  • Load Presentation: understanding and monitoring to ensure all goods are safe to load and transport e.g. quality pallets
  • Loading Activities: ensuring contractor driver and loader safety using safety techniques such as exclusion from MHE e.g. 3m rule. Understanding and monitoring mass and dimension limits and mass distribution
  • Load Restraint: understanding and ensuring all loads are correctly restrained for transport (LRG)
  • Supervision and Control: means never allowing an unsafe load to be presented, loaded or to depart a loading facility.

3. Transport Safety + Legislation

Chain of Responsibility legislation places considerable focus on the management of what might be considered very basic hazards within transport operations. Failing to acknowledge, assess risks and control hazards places multiple parties at risk of legal prosecution under both Workplace Health & Safety (WHS), Chain of Responsibility (CoR) laws.

Some typical hazards across our operations we focus on include, but are not limited to:

  • Working at Heights (WAH)
  • Exclusion between people and plant/vehicles
  • Driver Fatigue
  • Manual Handling.

4. Contractor and Employee Management

ANC’s contractor and employee safety management system is systematic and robust, and inclusive of client and category specific needs. Our system includes:

  • Rapid Induct – online modular induction system including client, category and risk specific training, managing and reporting on compliance
  • Toolbox Talks – onsite face-to-face training delivered via internal and external experts, ensuring we share information regularly and provide opportunity for demonstrations, Q&A sessions, proof of concept
  • Incident Reporting – ANC’s online reporting system for any health and safety incident, or near miss, which occurs in the course of ANC work
  • CoR and Compliance Checks – ANC’s systematic review and reporting on key transport safety factors such as speed, fatigue, vehicles, crane and load restraint checks
  • Lead Indicators – such as driver compliance, hazard and near miss reports, random drug and alcohol test
  • Lag Indicators – incidents reported including impacted people by injury.

Making the information available using ANC technology and our culture of safety, respect, honesty, care and loyalty, ensures we have detailed picture of the:

  • likelihood of different potential risks
  • seriousness of a risk if it occurred.

The importance of a robust safety culture and the impacts of safety consequences are broad and far reaching. They can include:

Before ANC Engage

ANC conducts thorough site audits and safety checks on our client sites which involve ANC. These site audits and safety checks are done prior to engagement to ensure we appropriately plan for a safe transition and successful new client implementation.

The site audit will systematically go through key CoR areas including loading, fatigue management, speed, vehicle checks plus critical WHS/CoR factors such as traffic management, dangerous goods, contractor management, training and induction, customer responsibilities, risk assessments and working at heights. Evaluating compliance with legislation will protect everyone throughout the supply chain and ensure safe operations at every touch point.

During the Partnership

We regularly review and redo the site audits and safety checks whenever a client worksite changes, such as new locations, site modification or expansion, new equipment, new processes and procedures. New products can also necessitate ANC to review and audit a clients site and safety checks. Any change will require ANC to revisit and review our WHS and CoR processes and procedures to ensure we’re mitigating risks and maintaining compliance.

ANC’s process for site audits and safety checks are highly consultative and completely transparent, involving the client, ANC and our Contractors at every step of the way. It is only by working in true partnership can ANC together with our clients build safe and compliant systems and processes throughout the supply chain.

Reporting Tools – Rapid Incident Reporting

Action prevents and manages risk in the workplace. Our team have access to an online rapid incident reporting software to report:

  • occurrences and their seriousness
  • near miss hazards
  • potential incidents to prevent accidents occurring.

It’s a highly effective way for us to identify, report, control, and reduce the risk of hazards.

ANC’s safety management system is systematically measured and reported on, demonstrating our leadership and expertise in building and maintaining a culture of safety first always.

  • Toolbox Talks – At least 1 toolbox topic per month aimed to be delivered to 100% of ANC employees and contractors through Rapid, supported by face-to-face delivery where possible
